Check out Salt Publishing London's Wena Poon website featuring the UK/US edition of Lions In Winter. Salt Publishing taped an author piece-to-camera in Russell Square gardens in Bloomsbury in October, as well as several author audioclips reading stories from the title.

According to the National Arts Council of Singapore, Wena Poon is only the 4th Singapore-born author to have her books published in the West since Singapore became a country in 1965. Something to celebrate!

Wena Poon has completed a second collection of stories, called "The Proper Care of Foxes". Contracts are pending with Singapore and UK publishers for Asian and international editions to be released Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.

The stories of Singapore-born American author Wena Poon have been described as having “a punchy, kickass, in medias res feel…punctuated with moments of lyrical flair”. “Alistair.” Brian raised his voice warily. “You have to tell them the truth.”

Alistair screamed. He stamped his feet against the wall. Drawings fluttered to the ground.

“You have to, sooner or later. You have to get them to understand.”

“It’s easy for you to say. You don’t have my parents.” Alistair ran the back of his hand over his nose. “You know that scene, in Alice in Wonderland? The Queen says, ‘Sentence first – verdict afterwards!’ Off with her head, Brian. Off with her head! And Alice says –“

“Alistair, you’re not making sense, you’re pissed.”

“And Alice says, ‘Who cares for you? You’re nothing but a pack of cards!’ And they all explode into a thousand pieces and sh-she wakes up, and it was just a dream. It’s brilliant. I wish I could say that to them.’”

Alistair dragged the phone across the room and collapsed on the bed, crawling under the bedclothes. His voice came through muffled. “They have it all set up, the golf club. The job. The arranged marriage. She’s the daughter of an engineer. An Engineer! Big, fucking, deal. My mum sent them – the in-laws - copies of my secondary school exam results, my baby photos. For pre-approval. They told me.”

Alistair began to cry. “I don’t know these people any more. What kind of world they live in. I don’t know anymore. I am so fucking unhappy. I am so fucked up.”

The next day, he woke up with his face all crumpled, and Brian was at the door, wearing his stupid band T-shirt and carrying his battered guitar case.

FIVE DAYS IN IRELAND

From The Irish Times, August 9, 2008 - Jhumpa Lahiri, the winner of this year's Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, will read from Unaccustomed Earth, her winning collection, during the Ninth Annual Frank O'Connor International Short Story Festival in Cork in September, as well as taking part in a public interview with this paper's literary correspondent, Eileen Battersby.

The five-day festival will also see a former winner (in 2005) of the prize, Bejing-born Yiyun Li (see W6), making her first appearance in Cork for a reading and interview. Other writers taking part are Mary Leland, Wena Poon, Clare Wigfall, Mary O'Donnell, William Wall and Bernard MacLaverty . LIONS IN WINTER LONGLISTED FOR INT'L FRANK O'CONNOR SHORT STORY PRIZE

"Lions In Winter" was longlisted for the 2008 International Frank O'Connor Short Story Prize. This year's prize was awarded to Jhumpha Lahiri, Pulitzer-prize winning author of "Unaccustomed Earth".

As a result of the longlist, the FOC committee has invited Wena Poon to read from her work at the FOC literary festival in Cork, Ireland on September 17-21, 2008. Jhumpa Lahiri and Yiyun Lee also read. See festival programme.

This is the first time a Singaporean author, and MPH, a Malaysian publisher, appeared on the FOC longlist. The longlist had a preponderance of authors from the West: 36 out of 39 authors. Only 3 authors were not from the West - they were from Singapore (Wena Poon), Nigeria and Taiwan.

A member brought 15 students from China to the club who shared their feelings about migration and dislocation, one of the themes of book. A member of the audience posts online, "I enjoyed the book. It was written in an easy style and the characters were well developed. The bleakness of the lives of many of them were poignantly brought...Nice piece of work - looking forward to reading more by the author."

SINGAPORE TOUR AND CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS (JULY 28-AUG 2)

Wena Poon has been invited by the National Library Board of Singapore to perform author readings and teach creative writing workshops as part of the 2008 Read! Singapore summer festival. From July 28 to August 2, Wena will be featured at numerous Meet The Author events, lectures, and workshops. The July 29th Meet The Author session is open to public at the National Library Central Lending Library, Multipurpose Room, from 6.30 pm. Below is an excerpted description of Wena's workshop, to be taught by Wena to over 130 junior college and secondary school students:

This workshop explores the theme, “Where Do Stories Come From?”.

The purpose of this workshop is to get students to think about the origins of stories, and to vocalize and write about stories that they are exposed to, in order to encourage the habit of creative writing and self-expression.

We will look at the origins of famous stories. This will help students conceptualize how these famous stories, which we took for granted, first started germinating in the author’s head. By focusing on where stories come from, students may be inspired to then try their hand at writing their own stories.

We will watch a scene from the recent film, “Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” where Lucy enters the wardrobe and sees the faun in the snow. We will discuss how many great books start with a germ of an idea.

Time permitting, we will watch a scene from the recent film, “Superman Returns”. We will discuss the Jewish co-creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who came up with the idea of Superman in 1932 during the Great Depression in America.

As part of Read! Singapore, which reached out to 27,000 people this year, the author taught creative writing workshops at Singapore schools. "I have never attended a creative writing workshop in my life," says the author. "I don't believe that literary writing can be taught. Your best hope as someone leading these workshops is to inspire and encourage. I remember vividly being a teenaged student in Singapore. If I was told by my teacher to attend a local author's workshop, I would be turned off right away. So instead of teaching writing to the students, I talked about the origins of story. We talked about stories in movies and videogame plots and about blogging, which is how most people express themselves these days. Through talking about stories in new media, I want to impress upon students that Art is everywhere and certainly not beyond their ability to produce, since they already enjoy it everyday."

Published in December 2007 by MPH, Lions In Winter is a work of literary fiction comprising 11 short stories about Singaporeans living in the West.

Within two months of its publication, Lions rose to No. 6 of the Straits Times Top Ten Bestseller List (February 3, 2008), above works by Stephen King, Mitch Albom and Khaled Hosseini. Not only was Lions the only book on that list by an Asian publisher, it was the only title written by a local writer.

In the third month of its launch, the book entered into its second print run.

Singapore, 17 June 2008 – The pleasure of reading never goes away no matter how old, how busy, or even where you are. For this reason, SilkAir and the National Library Board (NLB) are excited to officially launch the 'Booklovers on Board' programme today.

The 'Booklovers on Board' programme invites SilkAir passengers to escape into a world of fiction while flying high in the skies. The following short story titles are available for travellers to borrow on all SilkAir flights:
